2020 is almost over. Words seem inadequate to describe the momentous events we’ve lived through and continue to wrestle with – the pandemic, Black Lives Matter, national elections . . . We’ve lost our anchors of time and place, our livelihoods, education, friends and family, and for those of us who make music, the total, absolute, unadulterated joy of live music making. Yet we found ways to create in different ways. The internet has opened vast possibilities of accessibility and new audiences. I’m so proud of our White Snake team as we seized the moment to invent new ways of making opera, and so grateful to you, our audience, for supporting our innovative experiments.
We premiered “Alice in the Pandemic” in cyberspace to rave reviews. The singers in “Alice” performed live synchronously from their homes as we solved the latency problem in digital performance. “Alice” has been acquired by the Library of Congress for its Performing Arts COVID-19 Response Collection, a great honor indeed! And we just celebrated our essential workers in Sing Out Strong: Essential Voices, a “triumph of artistry and technology.” Seen and Heard International
