Rancher Raymond’s Last Sunset

Remembering Raymond Reeves
From the Reeves’ family
Composer: Robert Howard

Our Dad Raymond led a storybook life, A proud Texas rancher
A man who would place his kids on a new horse
Just after bucked off by another
He loved old western movies and his country music
And like anyone growing crops for a living,
He was addicted to the weather

He loved to sit on his back porch to watch the sky change colors
Sometimes he’d call us up and say
“I’m looking at a beautiful sunset today
This will not be like any other in my life.”

We were able to see Dad, say a brief goodbye
The ranch was quiet, so quiet when we came back to a sunset in the sky.
It felt so heavy to enter Dad’s home
A place that was “so him”
A place filled with memories past, of Easter eggs stashed away.
Our rare, but homely Christmas tree, with our homemade ornaments

We were confronted with Dad’s absence
His things scattered on the kitchen table
His brown Schnauzer, Reggie, sniffing all around
Wondering where, oh where has Rancer Raymond gone

He loved to sit on his back porch, and watch the sky change colors.
Sometimes he’d call us up and say
“I’m looking at a beautiful sunset today.
This one will not be like any other in my entire life”

We were able to see Dad, say our last goodbye.
The ranch was quiet, so quiet when we came back,
a sunset filling up the sky.
