White Snake Projects Call for Composers for SING OUT STRONG: Emancipated Voices

OVERVIEW:

Sing Out Strong is a multi-year community-based project in which we reach out to ordinary people in our community and commission them to write texts on activist themes that resonate with them personally. This season, we explore voting as freedom, in anticipation of the upcoming general election. The community’s texts will be set to music to make songs which will tour Boston’s neighborhoods.

COMMISSION INFO:

We will select 10 composers to work with writers and the White Snake Projects team to create original songs based on community texts.

  • Instrumentation—Three of the songs will be for voice and youth orchestra, while the remaining seven will be for voice and instrumental trio (piano, violin, cello). Composers selected for the youth orchestra commission will meet in person or over Zoom with staff at the Boston Music Project to discuss best practices when writing for youth orchestra.
  • Performances—The songs will be performed across Greater Boston beginning in March 2024, with at least 3 planned performances.
  • Compensation—Composers selected for the youth orchestra songs will be paid $350. Composers selected for the trio will be paid $125. All songs will be performed live in Boston in spring 2024; composers will receive access to a live recording.

 

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Due to the content, applicants must be currently living in the U.S.
  • DACA recipients and undocumented residents are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • LGBTQIA+ identified persons, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC), and individuals from other communities historically underrepresented in classical music/dialogue around voting are also strongly encouraged to apply.
  • There are no age restrictions.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION:

Please submit the following materials:

    • 2 Score Samples — at least one work should demonstrate the composer’s ability to write for voice
    • Audio links for score samples — can be a link to Google Drive, Soundcloud, YouTube, Vimeo, etc. Please keep samples from 2 – 5 minutes each.
    • Short Biography (150 – 300 words)

COMMISSION INFO:

  • Selected writers will receive a $50 honorarium
  • Selected writers will work with White Snake Projects creatives to craft their writing into lyrics

 

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Due to the content, applicants must be currently living in the U.S.
  • DACA recipients and undocumented residents are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • LGBTQIA+ identified persons, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC), and individuals from other historically underrepresented communities are also strongly encouraged to apply.
  • There are no age restrictions.

 

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION:

Please submit one or more pieces of writing responding to the prompts and quotes provided below or the theme of “voting as freedom” more generally. The writing may be poetry, fiction, non-fiction, etc. Please keep submissions under 1 – 2 pages in length.

 

  • Why is it important for people to vote?
  • How does voting relate to freedom?
  • If you can’t vote now, do you want to and why?
  • Who should be able to vote and why?
  • Does everyone have a responsibility to vote?
  • What does voting mean to me? What does it mean to my family?
  • Do you think voting can change things? How?
  • What would it mean to live in a society where you don’t have the right to vote?
  • How can you share the importance of voting with other people?
