Jorge Sosa is a Mexican-born composer currently residing in New York. His style mixes folk and traditional music from around the globe, Afro-Latin rhythms, Jazz harmonies, and the juxtaposition of noise and lyricism. Science, ecology, multiculturalism, spirituality, and social justice are recurring themes in many of his works.
Jorge has been collaborating with librettist Cerise Jacobs and White Snake Projects in developing two new operas: I Am A Dreamer Who No Longer Dreams and MONKEY with premieres scheduled for 2019, and 2021 respectively. Jorge’s first full-length opera, La Reina, commissioned by the American Lyric Theater (ALT), was performed in a concert version as part of the 2016 “PROTOTYPE” festival in NY. Jorge has been a composer in residence with the NYU New Music Ensemble since 2015, collaborating on a number of works for chamber ensemble, free improvisation, and electronics. Jorge and the NYUNME are currently preparing a new CD that includes all the pieces developed as a result of this collaboration. Jorge’s work Sunrise for orchestra was one of the winning pieces for the Allentown Symphony Orchestra “Picture at an Exhibition” composition competition. Sunrise was premiered in the Spring of 2018. Jorge is currently an Associate Professor and the Chairperson of the Music Department at Molloy College.
